In an effort to cheer up families and staff stuck at home due to the coronavirus pandemic and to maintain social interaction despite social distancing, Bridgewater-Raynham Superintendent Derek Swenson launched a "joke of the day" video challenge on the district's Facebook page.

2020欧洲杯预选赛赛程BRIDGEWATER — Laughter has a way of bringing people together.

2020欧洲杯预选赛赛程With Gov. Charlie Baker ordering schools closed until at least May 4 in an effort to curb the spread of the coronavirus, Bridgewater-Raynham Regional School District Superintendent Derek Swenson has turned to daily jokes to provide a bright spot during a tough time for staff and families that have been stuck at home for weeks.

“We’re physically distancing ourselves from others, the last thing I wanted to do is socially distance ourselves from our kids and our communities,” he said.

Swenson kicked off a daily joke challenge on April 5 on the district’s Facebook page, naming it the “Turn That Frown Upside Down We Are B-R One Team One Family Joke of the Day Challenge." He enlisted the help of his daughter, Greta, for a Star Wars pun about returning to school.

“Why are parents like Jedi Masters?” Swenson asked her. “Because they continuously wish each other May the 4th be with you.”

“Was that joke supposed to be funny?” she quipped in response.

Swenson likened the challenge to the “ALS Ice Bucket Challenge” popularized in 2014 to raise money for Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) research, where the person who completes the challenge challenges another person to do it. In turn, Swenson challenged Assistant Superintendent Ryan Powers.

Since then, the challenge has hit multiple schools in the district, with jokes rife with puns. Powers told a joke about frog’s car being “toad” away, Raynham Middle School Principal Charlene Charette shared a cow joke (“Why did the cows lay down in the rain? To keep each udder warm!”) and Bridgewater-Raynham Regional High School Principal Angela Watson enlisted her niece and nephew to tell a couple of jokes, including a slight twist on the “Why did the chicken cross the road?” joke (“to get to the other slide!”). Bridgewater Middle School Assistant Principal David Hines told a joke about the strongest days of the week – the weekend – because the others are “weak” days.

It’s even stepped up a bit: Bridgewater Middle School Principal Tim Kaliff touched up his wife’s roots while telling his joke on camera; Mitchell Elementary Principal Dennis Bray “mistook” the challenge for the ALS ice bucket challenge, was “stopped” in time, told a math joke and then was still doused in a bucket of ice water; and Williams Intermediate School Assistant Principal Matt Clark turned to Chuck Norris for a slew of “interesting” facts about the legendary martial arts figure.

2020欧洲杯预选赛赛程In one fact, Clark said that in a game of Connect Four, Chuck Norris only needs three moves to win the game. For another, he noted that when Chuck Norris does a pushup, he doesn't push himself up, rather he's pushing the earth down.

“We started that two week ago and I gotta tell you, every time someone gets challenged, it’s kind of evolving,” Swenson said. “It’s kind of getting stepped up to the next level where I’m kind of disappointed I was the first one to go because I would have had a little more.”

2020欧洲杯预选赛赛程And while they’ve set up other interactive platforms for teachers and families, like Google Hangouts, to talk with students and have check-in meetings, this is a way for administrators to also keep in contact with the kids they used to see in their halls during the school week, he said.

2020欧洲杯预选赛赛程“It’s just kind of a nice way for administration to stay connected with the families, show them a little bit 'behind the curtain' that I’m not just the guy who sends out the instant alerts or cancels school or makes the tough decisions,” Swenson said. “I’m a person, I’m a parent and I do care about our people. Instead of all of this information I have to send out, that’s more information revolving around this situation, I wanted to make it a little more lighthearted and fun and that’s kind of where it came from.”

2020欧洲杯预选赛赛程So far, they’ve gotten good feedback for the effort, Swenson said, and even the comments and “likes” on the posts themselves show families are enjoying it.

“That means you are, on a small level, brightening someone’s day for a few minutes at least,” he said.
