BRIDGEWATER — When Jon and Lydia Taros look back on their wedding, what might stand out are their patterned face masks and green rubber gloves.

The Franklin couple married Thursday outside Bridgewater Town Hall in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic with Town Clerk Marilee Kenney Hunt, who officiated their wedding, standing at least six feet away.

"(Our families) were supportive and understood the situation and that we really wanted to be married,"said Lydia, who is 28.

Prior to their wedding, neither of them had been to Bridgewater. Jonathan said he has driven through town a few times and might have gone to a summer camp there has a child.

Initially, the couple planned to have a small ceremony with their families at the Arnold Arboretum in Boston in May. They were looking forward to getting married while the flowers were in bloom.

"Pretty quickly we realized that was not going to happen," Jonathan, who is 30, said about those plans.

Lydia researched which town halls in the area were still issuing marriage licenses and allowing couples to give intentions in person. Their own town hall in Franklin wasn't doing it anymore, but they found that they could do that in Bridgewater.

"We're trying to do what we can and hope that it's happy for them," said Hunt, the town clerk, about working with couples.

Jon and Lydia are one of four couples she has married in the past few weeks since town hall, schools and non-essential businesses have closed and people were ordered to stay home.

Hunt said her office has gotten requests to get married because it is one of the few in southeastern Massachusetts that is still processing marriage licenses. Some clerk's offices have referred them to her office, she said.

Some people have gotten married because of COVID-19 related reasons, Hunt said, like one person losing a job and needing to regain access to health benefits. Generally, others have married before one was admitted to the hospital or set to undergo cancer treatment. Hunt and her staff try to be sensitive.

The Bridgewater clerk's office has taken safety precautions with marriages, like by social distancing, giving people paperwork to fill out in their cars and asking them to bring their own pens.

Everyone — the couple and Hunt — is asked to wear a mask and gloves during the wedding. Afterward, they are able to order their marriage certificate online.

It's the imperfect things that make it memorable," Hunt told Jon and Lydia Thursday. "I think you got the best wedding story ever."

Looking ahead, the couple plans to have a bigger celebration when things are safe. Until then, they will likely have a family video chat or continue to share the news through text messages.

It feels nice to have something to celebrate during a time like the coronavirus pandemic, they said.

Things don't always work out, but things end up working out better than we have expected," Lydia said.
